Ópera and ranchera are two of the world’s leading art forms with enormous musical and thematic similarities, yet they remain completely isolated from one another.

The audience for ópera in Mexico is small and the support systems for performers are under resourced, yet Mexico produces some of the greatest opera singers in the world.

Outside of Mexico, the audience for ranchera is a kind of specialty niche based on its colorful staging and presentation, yet in México it is one of the most popular and important art forms.

In spite of the many thematic and emotional similarities in their repertoire of stories, ópera and ranchera currently exist in separate cultural ecosystems with large multi-cultural audiences that nonetheless remain isolated from one another. Although México excels in both, a musical framework capacious enough to accommodate the two musical traditions without compromising their individual integrity has never been attempted. Until now.

A rehearsal of the first Óperachera song and arrangement, Flores, is linked below. An album and series of concerts are in process for the second half of 2025.

Óperachera embodies a renaissance of these two treasured musical traditions and a radical reimagining of their universal musical-emotional language through a transcendent fusion of their historical themes, emotions and visual styles.

A reimagining of our shared musical history

Although she is steeped in ópera history and the classical canon, Fernanda has a nearly encyclopedic knowledge of, and deep passion for, Mexican history, cultural folklore and traditional music, especially ranchera.

Fernanda Santoyo

Based on her love for both art forms, Fernanda has partnered with world renowned concert violinist & composer William Harvey, lead violinist and guest conductor with the Mexican National Symphony Orchestra, to work with her in combining her unique appreciation and ardor for both opera and ranchera in a completely new art form called Óperachera.

Fernanda and William are creating pathbreaking compositions, arrangements and vocal stylings that expand both repertoires while growing their audience worldwide.

Fernanda and William have both traveled widely in Europe, the US and México and are passionate about both traditional Mexican and European musical cultures. They are equally passionate about preserving, expanding and sharing the vibrant music of both cultures with the widest possible audience in new and more inclusive ways worldwide.

When Fernanda approached William about creating Óperachera, he agreed to join the project without hesitation, and they are already working on a premier album and concert tour.
